Google Tag Manager

Track conversions and retarget fans with Google Tag Manager

Written by Harry Drake

1. Add your Google Tag Manager (GTM ID) to Openstage

2. Send Openstage events to GA4

Openstage loads your GTM container. Page views come from your Google Tag. Custom events (signup, posts, membership, etc.) need a GA4 Event tag.

  1. In GTM, add a Google Tag with that Measurement ID if you do not already have one. Trigger: All Pages (or Consent Initialization if you use Consent Mode).

  2. Enter the Measurement ID above and download the Openstage import file.

  3. GTM → Admin → Import Container → choose the file → Merge → Overwrite conflicting tags, triggers and variables → Confirm.

  4. Submit (publish) the container.

  5. In GA4 → Admin → Custom definitions, create an event-scoped custom dimension for each parameter you want in reports, e.g. step_type, step_number, surface, platform, tier_tag, post_id, metric. Realtime and DebugView show parameters without this.

⚪️ Note: Already imported an earlier version? Download and import again the same way: Overwrite updates the Openstage tags in place, while Rename would add a second copy and count every event twice.

3. What Openstage tracks

Every fan event Openstage records, and the os_ events your GTM container gets.

  • Openstage metric: Openstage records every fan event against the fan in your account, always, whether or not you use tags. Ad blockers don't stop it. You'll find these on a fan's timeline and in the Audience Builder.

  • Sent to tags as: the os_ events pushed to your GTM container, which forwards them to GA4, Meta, TikTok and more. They're only sent from Fan HQ and landing pages on .hq.fan. Pages still on the old .os.fan domains don't send them.

  • Consent: your container loads with Google Consent Mode set to denied, and events are pushed as they happen. Until the fan accepts the cookie notice, Google tags send cookieless pings (no cookies or IDs), which GA4 uses for modelled data. They're not stored and re-sent once the fan accepts. Meta, TikTok and other tags in your container must respect consent through their own consent settings. os_page_view is only sent once the fan accepts.

  • Every os_ event also carries page_title, page_location, page_path and timestamp, plus user_id once the fan is signed in. Hover an os_ event to see exactly when it's sent.

  • The import forwards all parameters to GA4. To report on one, register it as a custom dimension in GA4.

  • The list of events we track may change as we develop new features. This table will be kept in sync.

🟡 Please note: For a full list of what Openstage tracks, navigate to Settings > Integrations > Google Tag Manager and click 'what gets sent'.

⚪ Note: GTM tags can be applied to individual landing pages directly, but setting one globally via Settings > Integrations applies it to all landing pages created and published after that point.
